Thermostats
.

Thermostats are designed as temperature controlled valves which restrict the flow of coolant through the engine block.  As an engine runs it generates heat, which is in turn absorbed by the coolant.  When a coolant reaches a temperature equal to the rating of the thermostat,  the thermostat, opens allowing the coolant to flow from the radiator core to the block.  The coolant, which then flows from the block, enters the radiator core where its temperature is then lowered by the air flowing through the core.  Operating your engine within its optimum temperature parameters will reduce wear.
