| . Regardless of where you purchase insurance, here are some pointers to help you make sure you're getting adequate coverage. Be certain you're getting Agreed-Value coverage. Need a sure-fire way to do that? Ask your agent point blank: "If I lost my vehicle today, how much would the check be for?" If he launches into a speech about how the settlement depends on a bunch of complicated variables, you don't have Agreed-Value coverage. Research the agent and company you're working with. Make sure they're using a reputable underwriting company and that they have a friendly, knowledgeable staff and claims department. Learn the policy limitations and determine if you can live with them. Document, document, document! Hold onto receipts and keep tabs on the amount of money invested. Know the value and have paperwork to back it up, can only help if you need to file a claim. Have a professional appraisal to determine value. That leaves less room for debate when determining premiums or settling claims. Make sure you're insured even before restoration or rebuild is complete. We've heard too many stories about uninsured's being stolen from shops or garage facilities. If you built it yourself, ask the agent whether you can be authorized and paid to make your own repairs in the event of an accident. Be wary of "attendance clauses," which require that you be with your vehicle when damage is done. Most importantly, be up front and honest with your agent. Tell him as much as you can about your vehicle, as well as how you plan to use it. |
